The purpose of this article is to examine the current status of ethnomusicology in multicultural music education in Korea, by examining through academic discussions. Korea has changed drastically to become a multicultural society, and the interest in multicultural music among music educators and scholars has been grown tremendously. Since the first appearance of the thesis on "conceptual approach to" multicultural music education, until 2001 one or even no thesis came out every year. At 2008, sudden increase to double digit began to appear. For last 3 years, over 70 theses were poured out. Similar amount of journal articles on multicultural music/music education were presented, the first one appearing at 1992. Significant increase of the journal writings began to be occurred around 2004. Such statistics and its currents allow us to forecast the present situation of multicultural music education. The term 'ethnomusicology' on the other hand was introduced into Korea much earlier around 1982. While there was not-so-strong but constant line of its reference and research results in printed materials, the discipline had never settled in as a major study in Korean universities. Ethnomusicology was often regarded as an alternative methodic branch of the scholarship of Korean traditional music, and had never been understood as a scholastic discipline of world music(s) in its full scale. While recently the issues regarding the need for and method-search on multicultural music education arise vigorously, there seems very little treatment of ethnomusicological literature in their writings. To examine the current status of ethnomusicology in multicultural music education in Korea, an extensive literature review of the pertinent data will be carried, especially through the analysis of theses and scholastic writings whose title contains the term multicultural music. In addition, the literature which contains the term such as cross-cultural, inter-cultural, world music will also be examined and analyzed. And finally further questions will be addressed in the paper regarding the relation of the two disciplines specifically in terms of the reciprocal influence each other.
