Zbigniew Herbert(1924∼1998) was a Polish poet, playwright and essayist. He was recognized as a great author not just in Poland but also in the European literary history and nominated for Nobel prize for a number of times when he was alive. Polish government proclaimed the year 2008 to be the year of Herbert(Rok Herbertowski) to commemorate the 10th anniversary of his death and lots of seminars, exhibitions, book fairs and recitals of poems are planned to be held. Described by polish critics as "a witness to his time," Zbigniew Herbert can be considered a political poet. He was a spiritual leader of the anticommunist movement in Poland. His work has been translated into almost every European language, and he won numerous prizes, including the Jerusalem Prize and the T.S. Eliot Prize. This thesis is the first research thesis on Zbigniew Herbert in Korea. Zbigniew Herbert's life and work were shaped by World War II and life under Poland's communist regime. Considered a political poet unconstrained by ideology, Herbert's poetry emphasized sensory, everyday experience and questioned the notion of transcendence and ideologies that justified oppression. Herbert as a 'witness of history' witnessed irrational reality in turbulent times and stoutly resisted oppression from a totalitarian regime.
