F. Sologub's Petty Demon through the prism of occultism
Park, Young Eun (Hankuk Univ. of Foreign Studies)
The main purpose of this study is on the analysis of F. Sologub's narrative of occult in Petty Demon as well as on the examination of organic relationship between the two plot lines, about which were failed to be explained for many readers. Judging from this point of view, Peredonov, a protagonist of the first plot line, is not simply a vulgar character, but is also a scapegoat of sorcery. It is, therefore, very important to realize the first plot - the order of his visits to the other characters - since the author carefully arranges with the intention of displaying the gradual intensification of evil power, together with the lapse of time.
The author's careful depiction of Vershina, a sorceress, who appears both in the beginning and in the ending, is to place structurally great emphasis on the field of occult. As Peredonov finally becomes to commit homicide by the 'smoke' and the other magic power of Vershina, Sasha, who is another protagonist of the second plot line, gradually becomes to fall a victim to the power of Lyudmila's 'perfume'.
In this regard, it becomes obviously true that the two plot lines have great similarity in narrative pattern. It is also confirmed that Vershina is to Sasha what Lyudmila is to Volodin in the two contrastive plot lines. While Peredonov, who murders Volodin, put under the spell of Vershina, Sasha becomes subject to Lyudmila. In such process of the narrative of occult Nedotykomka, who had no specific bodily appearance, is little by little shaped like a 'snake'. This is the image which the author makes connection directly with the phenomenal world and the existence the absolute evil.
