On the Identity of Korea National Dance Company in the Dance Environment of 21st CenturyMalborg Kim, Ph. D.Professor of DanceEwha Womans UniversityThe 21st century is referred to as the century of cultures and arts. And the development of high technology enriched theatrical stages. Thus the world dance scene today is full of technical gadgets and spectacles which pleases us for one. On the other hand, it makes the world dance environment more competitive for a dance or choreographer to be the best or an excellent one. Also with the upcoming era of globalization, one nation?s border lines does not mean much thesedays.In this world dance context, the korea national dance company does now face identity problem. Does the korea national dance company should represent korean dance in the world or present the best korean dance? Does the national company should stick to the traditional korean dance technique or not? These are some of the issues discussed in this paper. Thus the history and current dance style of the korea national dance company and the concept of ?creative korean dance? and ?national dance company? were scrutinized and several suggestions were made for this company to meet this global dance scene. ?Creative korean dance? or ?national(ethnic) dance? are no longer sufficient for the global standard. The spirit of korean arts and cultures must be conveyed in dance with international sensibility.
