The Aesthetic Consciousness of the Traditional Korean DanceMalborg Kim, Ph.D.Professor of DanceEwha Womans UniversityThis study started from the question of what constitutes the beauty in Korean Dance. And it is based on the assumption that the characteristics of korean dance can be explained fully when the Korean spirit of Art is understood. Thence the art spirit and aesthetic consciousness of Korean Art was summarized in the context of Taoistic and Confucian thoughts which this writer considers as the two main bases of Eastern Philosophy.From this findings, it became clear that the concept of art, the artistic value and the aesthetic attitude in Korean Art were quite different from that of Western Art. Thus from the viewpoint of Korean art spirit, the artistic characteristics and the structure of expression in Korean dance were reviewed in four major points.Aesthetic consciousness evident in the perception of technique, expression, interpretation and tempo of Korean Dance was totally different from the western perspective on dance.
