This paper aims to introduce the recent historiographical development of a ‘new global history’ studies from the mid 1980s to the present in Japan and to reconsider the importance of British Imperial and Commonwealth History as a ‘bridge’ for creating global history studies. From the mid 1980s, a new trend of ‘global history’ studies appeared, partly due to the slackness and demise of the Cold War regime, but mostly from the new development of Asian economic history in the 1980s and the academic implications of the ‘East Asian Miracle’ or the rising of East Asian economy. The distinctive features of newly emerged ‘global history’ studies are the shift of research focus from comparative studies to studies of relationship or linkages, and the adoption of new frameworks of analysis, such as wider ‘mega regions’ and various networks of merchants and migration. In this paper, first I will review (1) intra regional or trans regional approaches in Asian economic history by prominent Japanese historians, especially, studies on intra Asian trade by Kaoru Sugihara, and (2) studies on the ‘International Order of Asia’ and the reconsideration of the Modern World System. These studies emphasize connection or linkages rather than comparison, and we may call it a new global ‘relational history’. And then, I will introduce the research activities at Osaka University on the Global History project, and our collaboration with the Global economic History Network (GEHN). Finally I ask for further international collaborations with Asian scholars in the newly developing research field of global/world history studies, through the formation of a new international academic network in the Asia Pacific, The Asian Association of World Historians (AAWH).
