The second treaty of Friendship and Commerce between Great Britain and Korea was ratified on 28 April 1884. So this year became the one hundred twentieth anniversary since the two countries got along amicably. The Anglo-Korean treaty was intensely studied in 1884 which was the year in which the 100th anniversary of the two countries’ friendship was celebrated. Since the year of 1884, very few studies of the treaty had been done until now. I understood the reason why the treaty was fully studied around the year of 1884 at first. After a while, I found some point at issue when I examined the existing research papers of the treaty: the papers rarely used the first historical materials like archives and records. Therefore, with this paper, I will study the Anglo-Korean Treaty of 1882-1883 by reviewing Sir H. Parkes’ Documents. Firstly, I checked the domestic and foreign policy of the British government and the British government’s diplomatic activities around the concluding of the Anglo-Korean Treaty. Secondly, I reviewed Parkers’ diplomatic activities at the same periods. In conclusion, I found Parkes’ diplomatic ideas in the East differ from the British diplomatic policy there; Parkes’ idea emphasized having an advantage of economical effects in the eastern countries. The British government’s idea was set to have an advantage of strategic effects which check the Russian advance to the East. Moreover, I found that the Parkes’ diplomatic activities gave consequence to the East in the late nineteenth century too.
