Connie’s ‘Becoming’ a Woman of WarByung Lyul Kim (Youngsan U)One of the current strengths of Lawrence studies has been developed in the face of profound ideological challenge to the contemporary ideas. Indeed, the very existence of the challenge suggests that, whatever assessment of his work critics may arrive at, Lawrence is a writer who cannot be ignored because the challenge he offers remains at the center of the current debate. Deleuze and Guatari, in their monumental book A Thousand Plateaus, listed Lawrence as one of the writers “who leave us troubled and filled with admiration because they were able to tie their writing to real and unheard-of becomings.” Lawrence, I believe, is rightly regarded as a vitalist thinker in the sense that he developed a version of the ontology of life as a process of ‘becoming-other’; becoming-woman, becoming-imperceptible, becoming-betrayer, etc. The ontological priority of ‘becoming’ is reflected in the fact that individuals, by not conserving themselves on one level of existence, can successfully achieve their fundamental shifts in personal and social identity. Connie, in Lady Chatterley Lover, must be one of the most vivid female figures who achieve their flight by successfully adopting nomadic strategy in order to free themselves from the falsity which is enforced on their existence. I understand Connie as a female who tries to be a Go piece in the Chess game, which is a game of State. In Deleuze and Guataari’s interpretation on the different characteristics between Chess and Go, the meaning of Connie’s flight, by trying to become a Go piece, is explicitly revealed. Being an element of nonsubjectified machine assemblage by denying intrinsic properties, Connie becomes a woman of war to deterritorialize herself from Clifford.
