To trace the subtle influence of D. H. Lawrence’s ideas or literary styles on Doris Lessing that several critics have noted, this paper examines differences and continuities between Ursula of The Rainbow and Martha of Martha Quest focusing on their epiphanic visions. Ursula’s vision is interwoven with her real life and its predicaments so that she tries to have “Jerusalem” in “the everyday life’s terms.” After about one generation's later and in a South African society, Martha’s wishfulfillment to overcome the separateness and antagonism of her world draws on the vision of “the noble city” that is an ideal community with no discrimination. However, the sheer utopianism of this vision is symptomatic of Martha's estrangement from her everyday world. The sudden revelation manifested in an unexpected “moment” where she was mystically integrated with everything around her in the African veld also reflects not only her helplessness in the real world but also her self-conscious and possessive grasp for the vision world. Nevertheless, Ursula and Martha are common in their search for “the unknown” and “something new” articulated and developed in the discourse on “darkness” which is significantly overlapped with the darkness of Africa in both of their visions.
