This paper calls attention to the relation between the latter part of D. H. Lawrence’s The Rainbow and the novelist’s treatment of the couple, Ursula and Skrenbensky. The main argument of this paper is that the uncertain, ambiguous closure of the novel has to do with Lawrence’s inconsistent, unrealistic characterizations of the love-couple, and in particular, with Ursula’s doubtful role of the New Woman and consequently, her ego-centric relation with her lover. Possibly, to justify a series of enigmatic social behaviors of the heroine, especially with her lover Skrebensky, the novelist characterizes him also as inconsistent, implausible, artificial.
