D. H. Lawrence’s Intersubjective BeingYoung Cheol Lee (Jeonju U)This study aims to discuss Lawrence’s intersubjective being in his critical perspectives of Western society and its codes. Lawrence constantly insists on the restoration of the physical-instinctive being which is scorned by the absolute moral value systems. In The Rainbow and Women in Love, his insistence on natural life, as lived by the Brangwens, reflects that the physical instinctive side of our being is more fundamental and elemental than an absolute moral code and its value systems. But despite this insistence, the pivotal element we shouldn’t miss is his sense of the interdependence of body and spirit which lies behind Lawrence’s continuing interest in the physical-instinctive being. Lawrence doesn’t want an exclusive boundary between body and spirit. He insists on a wholeness of being in which both physical and spiritual fulfillment are achieved. In Rainbow, even if showing the Dionysian darkness, Tom and Ursula’s shared weakness means that their selves are not intellectually and spiritually Lawrentian. In tracing this weakness of Tom and Ursula’s, the pivotal aim Lawrence addresses is that while the physical being is important, it is not enough for man’s self fulfillment--even the physical satisfaction which marriage may bring is to be found through the development of the physical-spiritual fulfillment between Ursula and Birkin. In other words, the ideal aim he projects in his novel is mutually integrated through the characters’ continual search for an inter-perceptive and inter-subjective relationship that fosters their self-fulfillment and self-creation.
