‘Being’ of Character and the Narrative Method in Women in LoveYoungran Koh (Suwon U)This essay examines narrative methods used to vividly embody character’s ‘being’. Lawrence, who wants to portray ‘being’ instead of personality or ‘old stable ego,’ explores the region between consciousness and unconsciousness, searches for a language for the unconscious, and articulates normally unacknowledged impulses. In Women in Love, Lawrence heightens realism into a projective psychic drama. The principal strength of this novel lies in its penetrating presentation of consciousness of Gerald and Gudrun. Appropriate styles and narrative methods corresponding to the characteristics of Gudrun and Gerald are used. Lawrence first illuminates Gudrun’s ‘being’ through free indirect discourse and then Gerald’s ‘being’ through Gudrun’s consciousness. Gudrun’s capacity for knowing and her clear perception make her the appropriate medium of consciousness through which we largely see Gerald. Gudrun is an observer reflecting Gerald’s own characteristic mode of ‘being’. Her penetrating vision of Gerald gives us a dual perception of him. In contrast to Gudrun, Gerald, who is terrified of the unconscious part of himself, is unconscious of his ‘being’. So authorial commentary and analysis as well as free indirect discourse are used to reveal the ‘being’ of Gerald. Character’s being is visually and concretely embodied through images as well.By the effective use of these narrative methods, the ‘being’ of Gerald and Gudrun, their affinities and differences, their psychological mechanism and destructive relationship which culminates in Gerald’s tragic death are concretely and persuasively portrayed.
