Sons and Lovers marks the beginning of a new phase in Lawrence’s career of novelist. He experiments various kinds of narrative methods; free indirect discourse, the skillful manipulation of point of view, multiple narration, authorial voice, and symbolic image. He presents consciousness in free indirect discourse and explores interactive and interpersonal relatedness through multiple perspectives which intertwine characters’ perspectives. The shift in perspective juxtaposes the two points of view and makes them read like a dialogue. Authorial voice provides balance to multiple narratorship, keeping an objective distance. The ‘light’ and ‘darkness’ image as well as nature image symbolizes Paul’s final decision to live by overcoming the impulse to die. Free indirect discourse and multiple narration, however, do not convey convincingly Paul’s problem and his development going on in his subconsciousness. The voice of author also doesn’t present persuasively Paul’s limitation to be conscious of his problem in relation to his mother, Mrs. Morel. The ‘light’ and ‘darkness’ image falls short of constituting the organic network of meaning. Even though Lawrence doesn’t succeed in making a highly effective use of narrative methods, Sons and Lovers marks his maturity as a writer. Sons and Lovers illuminates our understanding of Lawrence’s characteristic narration because it includes his original narrative methods in the early stage.
