Lawrence’s most works are usually thought to be filthy and obscene because he outspokenly depicts the sexual intercourse. But he tries to keep both human spiritual values and instinct in the course of capitalizing and industrializing society. He tries to take back or restore the human being’s life force through lively and actively interchanging blood. The writer tries to express the unsound and morbid circumstances and phenomena of industrial society through Gerald. He hopes to make the ideal love between Birkin and Ursula with understanding each other’s values and conceits. On the contrary, in case of Gerald and Gudrun, they ended in catastrophic result with Gerald’s death because Gudrun cannot accept Gerald’s life style and opinions and thoughts. Of course, at first, Ursula disagrees with Birkin’s way of thinking and conceptions in almost everything. But finally they reach the harmony and balance in their relations through narrowing their differences and conflicts. Especially, Birkin displays more his broad mind and tolerance than Ursula when they are in discord in some matters. Accordingly, Lawrence shows us that man needs to change his traditional conceptions and values in favor of woman’s interest and viewpoint to make the ideal love especially in the modern society through this work.
