Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effects of social skills training on conversational skills and assertiveness in chronic schizophrenic patients. Method: The study employed a quasi experimental design. The subjects included 66 inpatients in a psychiatric hospital, 34 in the experimental group and 32 in the control group. The intervention was conducted for 16 series, twice a week for 8 weeks. Conversational skills were assessed using the Social Interaction Scale developed by Trower et al. (1978)and revised by Chun (1994). Assertiveness skills were assessed using the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (Rathus, 1973) and revised by Chun (1994). Results: Conversation skills and assertiveness in the experimental groups showed significant improvement after the training compared to the control group. Conclusion: The present study found that social skills training had an effect to improve social skills in chronic schizophrenic patients so that this training is recommended to provide to the patients in order to improve social functioning and promote the ability to return to the society.
