The Lived Experiences of the Middle Aged Women's Crisis*

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to understand the lived experiences of the middle-aged women's crisis and to explore the nature of their crisis. Method: The research participants consisted of the 7 women living in Seoul from Aug. 2006 to Apr. 2007. The data was created by the interview on the experiences of crisis. The analysis of the data was made Colaizzi's phenomenological analytic method. Result: Five categories that emerged from themes and themes clusters were: ‘Myself overwhelmed by crisis situation’, ‘struggling to overcome the crisis’, ‘unconfirmed identity’, ‘lost middle-aged years’, ‘A serious doubt about life and the seeking of a new route’. The middle-aged women in Korea had developmental crisis with transitional characteristics as well as added crisis from Korean socioeconomic and cultural aspects. Conclusion: This study provides with a new perspectives to understand the middle-aged women's crisis and contributes to nursing knowledge development about crisis intervention.
