Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between anger, anger expression, social support, self-esteem, and depression in community-dwelling elderly. Methods: The subjects were 233 elderly who were community-dwelling in S or J City. Spielberger's STAXI for anger, Park's social support scale, Rosenberg's self-esteem scale, and Kee's GDSSF-K for depression were used. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson‘s correlation coefficients, t-test, and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 12.0. Results: Elderly with depression reported higher trait anger, state anger, anger-in, and anger-out and lower anger-control, social support, and selfesteem than elderly without depression. The depression of elderly showed significantly positive correlations to trait anger (r = .33, p < .001), state anger (r = .21, p < .001), anger-in (r = .28, p < .001), and anger-out (r = .21, p < .001), and a significantly negative correlations to anger-control(r = -.20, p < .002), social support(r = -.52, p < .001), and selfesteem (r = -.72, p < .001). Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that 56% of the depression was significantly accounted for by self-esteem (β = -.61, t = -10.71, p<.001), social support (β = -.18, t = -3.30, p < .001), trait anger (β = .13, t = 2.88, p < .004), and anger-control (β = .11, t = 2.20, p < .029). Conclusion: These results suggest that trait anger and anger-control with self-esteem and social support can be potential risk factors for depression in the elderly. Therefore, these findings will give useful information for constructing an intervening and preventative program focused on anger and depression in the elderly.
