An increasing attention is given to such ethical themes as the publicness of Christianity, public theology, and globalization. As globalization loom increasingly large on the horizon, its growing burden also stands at the center of theological debates. It seems true that the reality of the globalization and its future expansion cannot be denied. But there are still many people who have indefinable feeling of uneasiness and rejection of this unprecedented phenomena. South Korea is already turning into a multi-racial and multi-cultural society without sufficient preparation, even if it has been enjoying racially homogeneous nation as its national pride for many centuries. It is also true that the influence of corporations in a globalized society is ever-augmenting in a way we have never experienced before. Especially considering that globalization is often misunderstood as solely related to and resulting from neo-liberalism or Americanization, I find it Christian responsibility to take up this significant issue as one of its important tasks. There has been a variety of attempts to interpret globalization, but in my judgement, many of them prove to be fundamentally problematic. Two typical examples can be found in a capitalist model and a socialist model, both of which fail to develop persuasive argument. The spiritual and religious nature and character underlying globalization should not be ignored while simply focusing on economic aspects of globalization as exposed in those two examples. A proper understanding of dynamics of globalization can come with the thorough study on religion’s relevance to culture, in particular the relationship between religion and economy. An outdated invalid approach cannot be effectively applied to dealing with globalization and its related issues. A new paradigm may be required to help do justice to all aspects of globalization and this can ultimately serve as a stepping stone for the Korean churches to take an active part in the global arena.
