The purpose of this study is to explore a new model of liberal education of Christian university in an era of globalization. Globalization is the main factor to explain the current situation of Christian university. In order to find the features of globalization, I approach global phenomena in three dimensions of economy, polity, and culture. Through these approaches of globalization, I find that global phenomena have the reflexivity between global and local. This means that the task of globalization is to reinterpret the locality in the global situation. That frame of reference of globalization provides a re-appropriation of the heritage and traditions of liberal education for a new model of that.
In the modern context, liberal education was defined as the mental activities and preliminary process for special studies (Oxford University), modes of inquiry absorbing lots of knowledge and processing various information through critical methods (Harvard University), and the civil education using the reason for democratic society (Yale University). Even though three universities were representative Christian universities in western society, they disregarded the religious aspects in liberal education since the privatization of religion in the modem society. But the religious importance in private as well as public areas has being reinterpreted due to globalization. Thus, a new model of liberal education of Christian education needs a method that bridges theory and practice, connects the church to society, and correlates theology with its non-theological partners.
The new perspective of liberal education is the persuasion, interpretation, and performance model, which was suggested in the research area of practical theology by Hyun-Sook Kim. Firstly, the persuasive model of liberal education in Christian university emphasizes the inter-subjectivity between listener and speaker, learner and teacher. Through this persuasive process, both teachers and students create their own understanding rather than merely absorbing the knowledge handed by others. Secondly, the model of interpretation of liberal education focuses on the connection between heritage and traditions of the past and human experiences in the present. Thirdly, the performance model means a transactional communication process in liberal education of Christian university. Here, performance is a practical dynamics carrying social and cultural power to transform culture or to maintain it. In conclusion, the new model of liberal education of Christian university in an era of globalization-persuasion, interpretation, and performance-may be defined the creative activity to fulfill the realm of God through the praxis of God that embraces both the ecclesial and non-ecclesial context.
