Calvin’s understanding of the Decalogue provides a significant clue for understanding his theology and social ethics. Calvin thinks that the Decalogue is the norm of righteousness for people who have already been delivered. For Calvin, obedience of God’s law is the expression of gratitude that people have toward God. His theological ethics put such great emphasis on the normative function of the law that he was criticized for conceiving of God’s will in terms of biblical literalism. But, he approaches the Decalogue in the light of Christ’s teaching. Calvin connects Jesus’ summary of the law to the golden rule. That is, the golden rule directs one to properly love one’s neighbor. Calvin understands the essence of the golden rule to be equity. For him, equity, which is sometimes identified as justice tempered by mercy and clemency, serves as the rule for implementing love in social life. Calvin seeks to uncover the positive and social implications veiled by the negative commands, and vice-versa. His theology of and expositions on the Decalogue show what his social vision and ethics are. Celebrating the 500th anniversary of Calvin’s birth, the Presbyterian Church of strong Reformed theology in Korea is required to study again seriously what he taught through the Decalogue, and needs to be challenged to be a reforming Reformed church—a church that will pursue justice and love more than before.
