John Stott was committed deeply to campus mission through expository preaching Thus, it is important to examine his hermeneutical principles to understand his preaching. Stott believes three teachers for sound interpretation are the Holy Spirit, the reason, and the tradition of the Church. For analysis of the meaning of words, Stott adopts various approaches such as synchronic, diachronic, intertextual, etymological, contextual, and socio-historical. Stott also examines various grammatical elements. The historical and cultural approach as Stott’s main tool is to provide a certain control for sound interpretation. However, it seems that Stott simply accepts Hirsch’s argument that the meaning of the text is that which the author intended and is separate from the ‘significance’ of the meaning. We need to be aware of the limits about such clear distinctions since the distinction is not sometimes so clear in actual interpretation.
