A Study on the transformation pattern of Mongolian 'Swan Maiden' type folktalesThe purpose of this research is focused on analysis of transformation pattern and meaning structure of folktales. For this purpose, I examine Hury Tumer(Хорь Тумэд), Huriutae Mergeng(Хорьдай Мэргэн) and other variants. This is preparatory work to compare Korean folktale 'a woodcutter and a nymph' with them. In chapter 2, I look into two folktales, 'Hury Tumer(Хорь Тумэд)' and 'Huriutae Mergeng(Хорьдай Мэргэн)' which is stem from 'Swan Maiden'. These folktales are represented in mythical feature related to origin of tribe. Therefore the sacred marriage is main motif in these tales. In chapter 3, I examine 'Someday a young man' and 'Manihoar fairy (Манихуар)'. These stories developed to have rich plot contents through supplementing various and interesting episode to 'Swan Maiden' type folktales. 'Someday a young man' is combined Swan Maiden type folktale with similar episode in Korean folktale, 'Snail fairy(Urung Gaksi)'. 'Manihoar fairy(Манихуар' is narrated with searching structured story that prince look for a fairy who has ascended into heaven. These two tales are well reflected on realistic point of view stressing on more earthly world than heavenly world. Folktale is supposed to be transformed by omission, lapse of memory, deletion, dilatation and addition, or deviated from original version by teller's misunderstanding. But diverse versions of Mongolian 'Swan Maiden' type folktale are not explained simply by this transformation or deviation. 'Someday a young man' and 'Manihoar fariy(Манихуар' can be appreciated in the context of process of modal development linked with folktale - old stroy - epic poem. I suggest that further comparative study on Mongolian Swan maiden type folktales and Korean folktale 'Woodcutter and nymph' is necessary to identify universal and distinctive character in two contries folktales.
