The Zhanguo zonghengjia shu, one of the silk texts unearthed from Tomb Number 3 of Mawangdui, Changsha in 1973, is a controversial corpus of political and military strategies during the Warring States. The manuscript is similar in nature to accounts in the transmitted version of the Zhanguo ce. This is an annotated translation of the account number 4 of the manuscript, the core chapter to examine the nature and date of the Zhanguo zonghengjia shu. Based on the translation, the author proposes that the Type One of the text represented by the account number 4 would be an actual correspondence of Su Qin. Unlike the Zhanguo ce, edited in the Han period collecting various anecdotes available at that time, the Zhanguo zonghengjia shu maintains the authenticity reflecting the historical circumstance of the Warring States. Criticizing the previous studies on the dating of the account 4, the author further suggests the possibility that Su Qin’s correspondence to the king of the Yan state for pleading his innocence was written between the late 288 B.C. and the early 287 B.C.
