In West’s The Return of the Soldier, absence and presence are no longer different. In fact, they are treated the same: absence means presence, and presence means absence. Although the healing process of Chris is absent, Margaret’s facing reality is clearly presented. Understanding Margaret as Chris’s surrogate, this paper argues that the way to understand Chris’s cure, which is elided in the novel, is through understanding Margaret’s realization that she must let Chris know the truth. West goes into Margaret’s realization in detail, spending about 12 pages on it in a short novel. Because there is so much of a focus on Margaret’s debate about whether or not to let Chris be, readers must use the transitive property to understand what happens to Chris before he becomes “[e]very inch a soldier.”
