In the era of the demographic cliff amid low fertility rates in Korea, there has been an accelerating decline in school age population, presenting substantial challenges especially for those provincial universities. To solve the drastic reduction in enrollment resource problems, the number of overseas students coming to Korea has been snowballing over recent decades. On the crucial path to become an internationalized campus, university staff and faculty members are to support and communicate with foreign students from various countries in English, the world’s lingua franca. Along this line, this study set out to shed new light on the hitherto under-explored areas of investigation: English learning needs and motivations of university faculty and staff in a regional university. Given the pivotal role that motivation plays in learning and using English, this study implemented a questionnaire to measure four different types of motivation and English learning needs and administered to 155 university faculty and staff members. The collected data were analyzed with factor analysis, chi-square, correlation, t-test, and One-way ANOVA with Turkey-Kramer post hoc test. The results showed that among the demographic variables of university faculty and staff participants, age and employment period were statistically the most influential factors on their English learning motivations. In addition, both groups of respondents ranked oral communicative competence as the most needed skills. We hope that the study findings can contribute to the extant literature by bringing to the forefront of English motivation of university faculty and staff to which scant attention has been devoted up to now.
