In this paper, as I examine the intertextual relationship between Korah’s rebellion in Num 16-18 and Ezek 44, I will argue that the author of Ezekiel has Josiah’s reform in mind when prescribing instructions for the Levites and Zadokite priests. Ezekiel’s theological understanding of the priesthood in Ezek 44 reflects that he clearly knew King Josiah’s religious reforms for the Temple in Jerusalem as well as for the local shrines. To elaborate on King Josiah’s religious reforms, Ezekiel appropriates the narrative about Korah’s rebellion but identifies Aaron’s sons as the descendants of Zadok. The paper proceeds in three stages. First, it examines the literary form of Ezekiel 44 within the larger literary framework of Ezekiel 40-48. Second, it identifies and examines a number of intertextual relationships between Ezekiel 44 and texts from Num 16-18, Ezek 8-11, Ezek 16:59-63, Ezek 32 and 2Kgs 22-23. Finally, it examines the implications of these intertextual relationships and the setting for the interpretation of Ezekiel 44:4-16.
