Although Ezekiel was called to be a prophet, his mouth was closed. Accordingly, even though he saw the sins of the inhabitants of Jerusalem in visions of God, he could not prophesy against or rebuke them. Yet Ezekiel’s mouth was opened after the fall of Jerusalem, and Ezekiel prophesied the restoration of Israel and the temple. The book of Ezekiel shows that it was Yahweh’s will that Ezekiel’s mouth be closed and opened. It was also Yahweh’s will that Ezekiel was not able to take any action until the fall of Jerusalem. The book of Ezekiel reveals that the fall of Jerusalem in the past was Yahweh’s judgment on the Jews who had betrayed Yahweh. In contrast, Ezekiel, with his mouth opened, presented a blueprint for Israel and the temple, which would be restored in the future. In the end, the hope of restoration was promised to the captives. When reading the image of Ezekiel, who was silent before Judah’s destruction and declared restoration after the destruction, the situation of the writer of the book of Ezekiel and its readers should be considered more than the situation of Ezekiel and the audiences of his prophecy. In the time of the readers of the book of Ezekiel, Judah had already fallen, and many Jews were taken captive. In the days of the prophet Ezekiel, the captives and the inhabitants of Jerusalem existed separately, and there was a conflict between the two groups; but the readers lived in a time when the border between the two groups was broken and all Jews wished for restoration. Thus, the times of the readers of the book were completely different from the times of the audience described in the book of Ezekiel. Therefore, the book of Ezekiel emphasizes that the destruction of Judah was due to the sin of Jerusalem, and at the same time, it was necessary to reinterpret the restoration declared by Ezekiel as intended for all Jews. Hence, Ezekiel’s closed mouth and opened mouth as described in the book of Ezekiel depict both the destruction of Judah which was the past, and the present or future event of the true restoration of Israel, thereby imprinting the hope for restoration onto the readers who lived in the exilic and post-exilic periods.
