The Painting of Convocation Register of New and Old Meritorious Vassals (新舊功臣相會題名圖; Singu gongsin sanghoe jemyeong-do) is a folding screen with four panels owned by the Seokdang Museum of Dong-A University. It had been created to commemorate the convocation banquet (相會宴; sanghoe-yeon) that was part of the Hoemaeng Ceremony, attended by five groups of new and old meritorious vassals, and held on the 28th and 29th days of the 10th month in lunar calendar in the 37th year of the reign of King Seonjo (1604). It is the oldest and the largest documentary painting of a gathering of meritorious subjects. Moreover, it is the first extant documentary screen painting made and bestowed by royal edict, which predates the Late Joseon Dynasty period. The painting is also unique in having the word “Register” (jemyeong-do) in its title. Furthermore, it has the most refined technique among the documentary paintings produced immediately after the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592~1598). Even while inheriting the 16th-century tradition preceding it, its painting style is significant in reflecting new advances in verisimilitude in its depiction of the canopied tent and Mt. Baegaksan, the main peak in the background. Assuming that the painters employed to create portraits of meritorious vassals at those times had also participated in producing this documentary painting, and judging by its landscape style, this may be an early work by Yi Jing (李澄, 1581~?), who would become renowned as the best landscape painter of the 17th century.
