Rooted in mythology and rituals, kagura is a sacred artistic dance where mythological gods dance in order, to wish good fortune on villagers. As various cultural products have been developed in recent times, kagura has started to draw attention in terms of product value in various fields of art. Studies on kagura costumes can be a way to examine traditional Japanese clothing in its entirety. This research was conducted through literature review on articles and books about kagura, as well as field work through participant observation. Kagura costumes in Nasaengmun can be characterized as follows. First, the characters wore the same traditional Japanese clothing as worn by warriors of the Heian era. Traditional terminology and forms were used for eboshi, a type of hat, hakui, basic white clothing, and ooguchi, loose trousers. Second, the influence of Noh and Kabuki was traceable. For instance, a correlation can be estimated between kagura and Kabuki due to the fact that the kagura costume worn by Oni utilizes Yoten, a term also used in Kabuki costumes. Third, it was revealed that a variety of forms, materials, and patterns were used to maximize visual effects. The forms of the costumes were slightly modified from those of traditional costumes while their materials and patterns played a significant role in conveying symbolic meanings between the performer and the audience.
