The purpose of this research is to develop the design of athleisure wear, which is gaining in popularity among the 20s and 30s, by utilizing the formative characteristics of the costumes of Baiku Yao people of high historical and cultural value. The contribution of this study is to suggest a direction for diversity and creativity in fashion design. The results of the study are as follows. The product development process of Baiku Yao’s costumes was related to the traditional lifestyle, and the types of costumes were classified into casual wear, ritual wear, men"s wear, and women"s wear. The characteristics of costumes were straight cut, and loose fit, and pleated bottom. The costume expressed identity and emphasized the culture’s unique attributes. Black, white, and blue cloths were decorated with various colors and white thread embroidery patterns with vivid, saturated colors. As a result of the pattern analysis, abstract and simple patterns were symmetrical. There was inja (人仔) pattern as a human figure, chick pattern as an animal figure, and gummun(剑纹), hoimun(回纹), and ohjihyurrin(五指血印) pattern as a geometric pattern. Also, there was the Mi (米) pattern as a text figure and Yowangin pattern as an intricate pattern. The patterns expressed the history and culture of the Baiku Yao ethnic group. Based on the results, eight athleisure wear was developed. This study is meaningful in both the development of designs based on the formative characteristics shown in Baiku Yao’s costume and the integration of the costumes of ethnic minorities in China with contemporary fashion.
