This paper focuses on Ian McEwan’s Atonement through Kitschy writing and Ethical violence. Kitsch refers to the false illusions and fantasies that cannot be attained. In Atonement, readers only find at the end of the book that the narrative structure of the work is a meta-fiction. It is the strategy of kitschy writing that McEwan deceives readers and shows that everything readers see is false through the writing of McEwan’s persona, Briony. Briony’s kistchy writing is completed by the narcissistic belief of the writer and the expectation of the satisfactory ending of the reader. In Atonement, Briony’s sin lies in ethical violence that has destroyed the lives of others. Ethical violence means hostile and oppressive to the other because it presupposes that you already know the Other. In the false and fictional kitschy world, humans are killed in meaningless death by exercising ethical violence against the Other. McEwan argues that Briony makes true atonement only by showing the fiction of kitschy writing and turning her ethical violence into understanding of others.
