Purpose: The purpose of this study is to indicate a new paradigm for m easurement of the dynamic visual acuity through measuring and analyzing the dynamic visual acuity related factors, at the level of the central nervous system, using the brain waves evoked by visual stimuli of a specific frequency.
Method: For this purpose, we made a selection of three groups. Group A was a group with superior dynamic visual acuity as elite college athletes (A_group: 16 participants from tennis, badminton and sepaktakraw), Group B with ordinary dynamic visual acuity as elite college athletes (B_group: 15 participants from Korean wrestling and rowing) and Group C with ordinary dynamic visual acuity as college students who were not athletes (C_group: 16 participants). Using EEG device, we measured steady state visually evoked potentials (SSVEP) generated by visual stimuli with a specific frequency, and analyzed signal-to-noise ratio. Visual stimuli used a rapidly flickering target with a total of 10 frequencie, sincreasing the frequency band from 5.5 to 23.5 ㎐ in 2 ㎐ increments. In one experiment, 10 frequency bands wre repeated 5 times and two experiments were conducted by each subject. In order to analyze statistica dl ifferences, one way ANOVA and Bonferroni correction were applied.
Results: The results of this study are as follows. 1) The signal-to-nisoe ratio of all groups was the greatest at 9.5㎐. 2) A_group vs. B_group and A_group vs. C_group showed statistically significant difference at 15.5-23.5㎐. 3) B_group vs. C_group showed no statistically significant difference in all frequency bands except 7.5㎐.
Conclusion: In summary, the findings in this study verified that the faster flickering of the target as the visual stimuli, the less signal-to-noise ratio of the steady state vuisally evoked potential in the group with superior dynamic visual acuity.
