Linguists’ introspective judgment data of sentence acceptability have been criticized in various respects since they are not gathered by means of objective and rigid procedures. The present study explores the utility of experimental syntax in the area of Korean syntax via a direct comparison of the results of informal judgment collection methods with those of formal judgment collection methods. Our study investigates Korean data points that were published in the journal Studies in Generative Grammar between 2003 and 2013. We tested them with naïve participants using two formal judgment tasks (Likert Scale and Magnitude Estimation). The results show a convergence rate of 80% between informal and formal methods (LS 78%, ME 83%). Overall results indicate that formal judgments are shown to diverge from informal judgments given in the journal, which contrasts sharply from the 95% convergence rates reported in Sprouse, Schütze, and Almeida (2013). We, further, discuss some significant differences between acceptability judgments of pairwise phenomena and absolute acceptability ratings of a single sentence.
