This is to find a way to develop and renew the Korean Church by illuminating the history of the Celtic Church and its spirituality. While the Kelts are generally considered to be native European, this article mainly deals with the tribes who were pushed out to Wales, Scotland, and Ireland due to the expansion of the Roman Empire.
The person who made a great contribution to the commencement and development of the Celtic Church in Ireland is St. Patrick (387-462). This church had a different tradition compared with those of the Roman church. He baptized about 100,000 men and women, established 200 congregations, and started the Celtic monasticism during the course of 30 years from 432. Later a monastery in Iona in Scotland was established which became the heart of the evangelization of the Picts of Scotland and the North of England. Until the 12th century, such Celtic monastery communities played an important role in the revitalization of the Christian Gospel throughout Europe.
The spirituality of the Celtic monastery church was unique in several aspects. Firstly, its church was not a community isolated from the society, but coexisted with the villagers. Secondly, it was formed as a missionary community through the process of practicing the ‘White Martyrdom.’ Thirdly, it gave the same leadership to women as those of men unlike the Roman Church which adopted the patriarchal system. Fourthly, unlike the Roman Church which considered materialism as secular or even evil, it tried to hear the voice of God hidden within the creatures because all of God’s creatures are beautiful and good. Finally, the Celtic Cross is the symbol of unity between Christ and all creation. Here we can read a request for the modern ecological theology and find the true root of ecumenical spirituality.
A careful and profound investigation of the above aspects will be helpful for the development and renewal of the Korean Church.
