Henry presents his own first interpretation of Descartes in his essay, “The cogito and the Idea of Phenomenology” published in 1984. And in this essay one can also see Henry"s first use of the term ‘material phenomenology.’ Although he gave this name to the philosophy of Descartes, not to his own philosophy, it is not difficult to guess that this ‘material phenomenology’ is precisely aimed at Husserl’s ‘hyletic phenomenology,’ and one might easily understand what this means: here is where Henry’s phenomenology in the genuine sense begins as the phenomenology which differs from Husserl’s phenomenology. In this article, I will show by comparing Husserl’s interpretation of Descartes and Henry"s, how Henry’s phenomenology is distinguished from Husserl’s and where his unique area of inquiry is located.
