The purpose of this article is to examine the intergenerational influence and social life of the characters in Prabda Yoon’s short story, “Probability”, with a focus on three generations: the generation of the children, to which the story’s narrator belongs, the generation of the parents, and the generation of the maternal grandparents. To this end, I focused on the characters’ ways of thinking and behaviors, and observed that the parents made their child aware of reality, while the grandparents taught him how to practice love. In addition, the story revealed a standardized society in which unique personalities or diversity are not recognized. There was also the depiction of a side effect of a capitalist society, wherein sales are prioritized over the quality of goods. The mass production of such success-oriented people living in compliance with this social reality could result in a wave of social distrust. The once success-oriented narrator is skeptical of the purpose or value of life. Remembering his innocent childhood belief of being immutable can be one solution for giving his life direction making it move forward. Therefore, he is expected to be a member of society who lives at least somewhat faithfully to his beliefs.
