This thesis investigates the change in poet Yoon Bokjin’s children’s literature works, and the reason he went to North Korea after the emancipation period.
Yoon Bokjin defected from South Korea in 1950s. Most of his poetries were lyrics, and during the Japanese colonial period he had never had proletariat ideologies. It was generally proletariat ideologist writers who defected from South Korea after the emancipation period. Since Yoon was not a proletariat ideologist, his defect to North Korea is strange and unclear.
Till now, three reasons have been suggested for Yoon’s defection. First reason cited his friend Shin Gosong’s influence. Second was that he was a leftism sympathizer, and third was that he may have suffered from inferiority complex about poet Yoon Seokjoong.
This thesis, however, aims to explain that Yoon’s defection to North Korea stems from his conversion to socialism after emancipation. Yoon joined leftist organization, and followed its doctrines. He expressed regrets about his previous literary conduct during Japanese colonial period, and announced to become a pro-communist. Furthermore, his articles coincided with ‘August These(8월테제)’ of Park Heonyeong.
His conversion to socialism notwithstanding, it is unlikely that Yoon was a staunch communist. Rather, he aligned himself with communists who argued for bourgeois revolution and progressive democracy, such as August These. This bears resemblance to the nationalist ideas he expressed through literary works during the Japanese colonial period. However, Korea after emancipation failed to clear off pro-Japanese collaborators. Yoon had little hope for right-wing party, and believed that the left-wing party should establish a new country. This and several other reasons compelled him to go to North Korea.
To conclude, Yoon joined the left after the emancipation, but as a nationalist kind he was during the Japanese colonial period. It is for this reason that he defected from South Korea voluntarily.
