This study is to analyze the literary and musical characteristics of music picture books in South Korea. The 53 books searched by the keyword ‘music’, were finally selected by an early childhood education professional and a music education professional. For data analysis, content analysis and descriptive analysis were conducted. The results were analyzed by literature and music characteristics. In literary characteristics, firstly, the fantasy genre was the highest amount genre and in the order of non-fiction, non-fiction with story. Secondly, character of the human being was the most frequent character and the objects were the least. Public places showed the most in the backgrounds of the books, but in some occasions there weren’t any backgrounds at all. Thirdly, the plots of books were categorized with three types. Category 1, which is with a story and plot, was the most frequent plot Category 2, which is with a story but no plot, was less frequent than category 1. Category 3, which is without a story, was the least frequent plot In musical characteristics, a classical genre was most frequent but some books did not indicate any musical genre. The highest musical concept was timber and in the order of melody, rhythm, dynamics, harmony, form, tempo. The most frequent music activity was playing instruments and the least frequent activity was creating. On the basis of the results, the research was to provide the basic resources to develop music picture books and apply them in early childhood practices by literary and musical characteristics of music picture books.
