This study aims to investigate the effects of parent-adolescent communication on career decision-making self-efficacy of college-age children. The ultimate goal is to facilitate functional communication between parents and their children so that children are able to achieve age-appropriate career development and eventually actively engage in career preparation with intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, and confidence. To this end, 277 questionnaires were administered to current college students on and offline, and after excluding questionnaires with insincere responses, a total of 267 questionnaires were included in the final analysis. A multiple mediator model was established based on theoretical background, and the results of structural equation modeling are as follows. All variables were significantly correlated, and both the structural models for father-child communication and mother-child communication had a good fit. Regarding mediating effects, parent-adolescent communication did not directly affect career preparation behaviors but did indirectly affect behavior through the effects of internal motivation and career decision-making self-efficacy, confirming complete mediating effects of these two mediators. Furthermore, we compared R² values to examine whether the effects of father-child communication and mother-child communication on other variables differ. The results showed that R² did not differ among the variables with the exception of internal motivation, and there were no significant differences between groups. All in all, open communication with both parents increases internal motivation in college students, thereby encouraging them to choose their own career and act on their own decisions, thereby influencing career preparation behavior. In light of these findings, parents should strive to achieve open and positive communication with their children in order to help their children choose careers on their own.
