Bloomers are loose trousers gathered at the knee, formerly worn by women as part of a gymnasium, riding, or other sports outfit. Among the types of women’s active sportswear introduced in modern Korea, bloomers were the most widely worn. The scope of academic research on bloomers has been very limited despite their popularity. This paper contributed to the existing research by examining the literature, photographs, artifacts, and oral statements of bloomers. First, the study focused on the origin of bloomers in Korea by delving into its history in the West, and its introduction in Korea and Japan. Second, the shape, material, color, and the wearing of these active sportswear bloomers in Korea were examined. When the bloomers were first designed in the West, it did not gain wide acceptance because of the conservative atmosphere of the times, but it eventually found its place as gym suits in girls’ schools. Later on, the Japanese began to wear these active sportswear bloomers, which was then introduced in Korea. Although the Japanese possibly brought bloomers to Korea during the colonial period, the Western missionary teachers likely introduced them as gym clothes for girls. The gathers on the waistline and the hem of the bloomers were created using fabric or elastic bands. The bloomers were made with wool or cotton, and it was mostly dark colors. Various blouse types, such as the middy blouse, were worn with the bloomer, and it became suitable for diverse types of sports, as its length became gradually shorter. These bloomers were first worn in the school as active sportswear, and then for out-of-school activities from the 1930s, bringing convenience to Korean women in their diverse activities.
