Report Errors
The existing literature on process preferences has not reached, either in theoretical explanations or empirical results, consensus about who supports alternative models of democracy and why. In this article, we revisit public preferences for policy-making process in light of more refined measurements. Using original national survey data, we find (1) unequivocal support for both direct and expert democracy over representative democracy but (2) no solid rank between alternatives. The results support the `political dissatisfaction’ hypothesis and suggest that popular support for expert decision-making is shallow at best. Given responses regarding democratic perceptions and attitudes, it seems that citizens who are supportive of expert democracy have a low understanding of both expert-based political process and democratic principles.
