The purpose of this study is to investigate characteristics of reference works which were alienated during the research and selection process of the Joseon Art Exhibition (朝鮮美術展覽會). The reference works of the Joseon Art Exhibition serve as important review materials for the purpose of the exhibition at the beginning of the exhibition and the review direction. In previous researches, it is understood that displaying Japanese reference works and comparatively poor Joseon paintings in the same space is an instrument for visually revealing the superiority of ‘Imperialist Japan’ in aesthetic terms. However, it should be reconsidered whether the view that the selection and display of reference works is intended to further strengthen the colonial rule is an appropriate evaluation of reference works.
So far, there have been few studies on reference work and selection process in the Joseon Art Exhibition. There are discrepancies between the records of Joseon Art Exhibition Catalog and other materials at the time. Therefore, in this study, the list of reference works was systematically classified and synthesized first. First, I made a list of related information such as magazines, newspaper articles, catalogs, and institutional newsletters published before and after the exhibition. Through this process I was able to identify the screening process of reference works. The reference works sent to Joseon by the Ministry of Education (Science and Culture) of Japan were the works of the authors selected to send them to the Salon de la Socieété Nationale des Beaux-Art in Paris, France. This means that reference works are the latest art in Japan and the best art. Therefore, I would like to suggest that reference works need to be interpreted in terms of promotion of art beyond imperialism perspective.
