This paper presents thoughts on the interrogative predicates about ‘어떠하－’ and ‘어찌하－’. Both predicates have a convergent type, which is called an abbreviation and have a form of lexicalization in the use type. However, individual forms that are original, convergent, and lexicalized have heterogeneous character and behavior. There are two kinds of predicate in Korean interrogative sentences, one is the interrogative adjective and the other is the interrogative verb. The former functions to ask some unknown stativity and the latter asks ‘knowhow’ when one doesn’t know what to do.
They have respectively contracted forms that are derived from the phonological changes of origins. These forms are different from origins in the aspects of grammatical characteristics, for example, different distribution, disparate meanings, etc. The differences between them cause their changes of the semantic domains and some crossed distributions in the sentences.
