In this paper, I analyze the gender inequality and social discrimination experienced by Korean women who immigrated to the United States in 1970s and 80s. Based on the interviews that I conducted in 2005 in the city of New York, this paper explores how Korean family ideology and cultural knowledge which they carried with them are challenged in the new life situations of immigrants. They are middle-aged, relatively well-educated, working women, who have been living in the country for more than 20 years on average. Focusing on three areas including family, workplace, and everyday life context, I examine how their relationships with family members had to be adjusted, how gender, ethnicity, and social class intersect with each other in their immigrant life, and how these women make strategies to respond to social and gender discrimination against them. While there are many previous studies conducted on Korean Americans, studies on Korean American women, especially on their concrete experiences of social and gender discrimination are rare. Although this study deals with the situation of about a decade ago, it will provide an important reference material for future comparative studies on generational changes among Korean American women. This study will also function as a mirror in understanding the situation which increasing number of migrant women living in Korea face, as Korea becomes so called a sending country to a receiving country in the global migration flow.
