In Korean Church, 2017 was an important year for celebrating 500<SUP>th</SUP> anniversary of Reformation in 1517. Korean Church has tried to study legacies of great reformers and to apply their lessons for modern Christians today. The works of 16th century reformers had opened an era of Protestant Church and allowed lay missionary works in church ministry.
In this paper the writer presented the historical root of lay missionary movement in Reformation. Reformers such as John Wycliffe(1330-1384), John Hus(1373-1415), Martin Luther(1483-1546), Ulrich Zwingli(1484-1531), John Calvin(1509-1564), rediscovered and taught a biblical doctrine of priesthood of all believers in 16th century. The lay missionary works had been lost during one thousand years of medieval church.
Martin Luther wrote, “there is no true, basic difference between laymen and priests, princes and bishops between religious and secular.” Luther protested papal hierachical order of Roman Catholic Church and emphasized a biblical doctrine of priesthood of all believers. That doctrine has been considered as an essential lesson for lay missionary work until today. Legacies of reformers’ theology can be challenged and greatly useful for modern lay missionary works.
