This essay aims to examine racial discourses including passing and its genealogy as well as how they are represented in literary works by comparing two novels: William Faulkner’s Light in August and Gish Jen’s Mona in the Promised Land. This essay explore, first of all, extensive historical and discursive background of raciology, discourse of race and racism focusing on operation of bio-politics and bio-power. In turn, the essay analyzes how racial discourses established upon biological elements such as skin color and blood are represented in William Faulkner’s Light in August delineating tragic life of Joe Chrismas, a supposedly mulatto who cannot belong to both white and black communities. Then, the essay probes into Paul Gilory’s theories of conviviality and diasporic identity contextualized with globalization and diaspora. Critically engaging with Gilory’s post-racial theory, the essay analyze Mona in the Promised Land to show how Jen depicts satirically multicultural utopia in the novel to ironically debunk differentialist racism within it.
