“The Door of Time” consists of two big themes. One is the meaning of freedom and the other is the meaning of novel. If the former is a superficial subject, then the latter is the artist"s search for novel writing. In this logical structure, photography is a creative text that is like a novel. Yi Cheongjun seeks novelism through photography. Photography is a place of exploration of literary themes of freedom and love. It is also a space of self-search for something called novel.
Yi Cheongjun explores the truth through mental experiments. It is a form of adventure. Thus for him, the act of literature is that of the explorer. The characters in his novels have a painful inner face. This inner form is given the notion of freedom and love. Freedom and love are the central theme of Your Heaven or The Door of Freedom. It is the idea that is the purpose of Yi Cheongjun. It also acts as a fundamental spirit in the “The Door of time.” Kim Hyun called it freedom and the practice of love. It gains "self-transcendent power toward the other" and opens "the door of time to the future".

이청준은 복잡하고도 지난한 정신의 실험을 거쳐 진실을 탐구한다. 세계 구조의 취약성으로 인하여 그것은 일종 모험의 형식을 낳곤 한다. 그리하여 그에게 문학 행위는 탐구하는 자의 그것이 된다. 지극히 단조로워 보이는 듯한 한 개인의 삶조차 그 내면성의 과정에는 얼마나 심원하고 또한 음험할 수조차 있는 생각들이 흘러드는가를 그는 궁극으로 추적하고자 한다. 고난이자 환멸의 단계를 거쳐야 하는 이 내적 형식에 자유와 사랑이란 관념이 주어진다. 자유와 사랑은 당신들의 천국이나 자유의 문에서 집적된 이청준 문학의, 그 문학 행위의 목적이 된 관념들이다. 그것은 ｢시간의 문｣에서도 인간 생명에 보존되고 앙양되어야 할 근본정신이어야 한다. 『당신들의 천국』에서 김현이 보고자 한 ‘자유와 사랑의 실천적 화해’는 ｢시간의 문｣에도 여전히 내속한다. 그것은 “타자에게로 향하는 자기 초월적 힘”을 얻으며 “미래로 가는 시간의 문”을 열게 된다.
｢시간의 문｣에서 자유는 사진의 의미작용에서 일어나는 불화이고 분쟁인 의미의 불가능성에 가 닿아 있다. 이러한 의미의 논리 구조에서 사진은 소설과 다름없는 창작 텍스트이다. 곧 이청준은 사진을 통해서 다른 방식으로 자신이 끈질기게 탐색해 온 소설론을 모색한 꼴이 된다. 사진은 자유와 사랑이란 문학적 주제의 탐구의 장소이자 또한 소설이란 무엇인가에 대한 자기 모색의 공간이었던 셈이다. 사진이 ‘시간의 문’임을 밝힘은 그렇게 이청준 문학의 정체성을 확인하고 그것을 자리 잡게 하는 방법의 특이성을 또한 분석하는 계기가 될 것이다.
