The purpose of this study is to explore and reconstruct Rosemary Ruether’s analysis and overcoming of globalization in order to help the Korean Church which faces serious challenges brought on by globalization. Ruether calls neoliberal economic system as corporate globalization, and understands it as the latest stage of Western colonialist imperialism. For Ruether, globalization is a huge system made up of theories and materials. Its kernel structure is the Bretton Woods System which give rise to devastating economic inequality. Globalization exacerbates earth’s ongoing impoverishment, yet it is justified by ideologies based on transcendental dualism. Ruether’s overcoming of globalization consists of theoretical and practical overcoming. From the perspective of inter-relationship which replaces transcendental dualism, Ruether reconstructs Christian theology and deconstructs the ideologies in terms of the reconstruction. Affirming inter-relationship as a principle of praxis, Ruether argues for an ecological spirituality and a political movement, offering concrete strategies and solutions to overcome globalization. After exploring Ruether’s work, especially its self-reflective reconstruction of Christian traditions and praxis, this study critically reconstructs it for the sake of the Korean Church in Korean contexts.
