The purpose of this study is to explore whether doping, which is a major issue in modern sports, is possible in dance as well. Athletes have used substances to enhance performance, participate in competitions, or conceal weaknesses. Considering the nature of sports that can bring athletes fame and riches through competition, doping is one of the enticements to them. Doping is banned for such reasons as fairness, role models for the public, and adverse side effects on health. Athletes, however, have attempted or used banned drugs to win a competition despite the banning. Dance has much in common with sports and at the same time, is highly different from them. Doping is generally not an issue in dance for art or education. Dance, when incorporating a competitive component, can raise the possibility of substance abuse. That is because dance, too, is performance in which competition can take place through contests, and so on. If dance incorporates competitive components, the performers, therefore, may attempt to use banned drugs for the following reasons. Dance requires as much strength, quickness, and other physical abilities as required in other physical activities. Doping can be done as a means to enhance such skills. Second, body shape management is a critical issue in dance. Substances like diuretics can be used for weight control, body shape management, or the like. Last, competition makes performers feel tense. Banned drugs like beta-blockers can be used to relieve one"s tension. Since competition in dance can raise the possibility of doping, preventive measures need to be taken.
