The aim of this paper is to analyze Sunflower Movement in Taiwan. This paper identifies the Sunflower movement was triggered by digital media in ICT(Information Communication Technology) and political socialization in Taiwan.
Sunflower movement was occurred in 2014 to protest CSSTA(Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement). Almost 400 university students occupied the legislative chamber on March 18 in 2014, and it spread out into the whole country. The most characteristic of the movement is that the momentum is based on digital media. The movement was diffused into Taiwan rapidly, it was possible because existing social conflicts was expressed by ICT.
This paper is based on several research questions. Why the sunflower movement was triggered by students? What factors make the sunflower movement turn into nationwide protest? Can we identify the sunflower movement as a symbolic incident to represent limits of representative democracy in Taiwan? This paper insists that the sunflower movement was a result of technological development in ICT and political socialization.
